What is Virgin Coconut Oil?

Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is produced from the coconut without exposure to heat, by cold-pressing the milk from the coconut meat. Followed by extracting the oil from the coconut milk and water. VCO is 100% natural, unbleached and has an ivory white colour appearance. Virgin coconut oil is popular for its pleasant aroma, taste, antioxidants, health benefits and various essential vitamins.

How is Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) Made/Extracted?

VCO is extracted from coconut milk of fresh coconuts. It later undergoes fermentation, churning (centrifugal separation), refrigeration and the enzyme actions after the oil is separated from the moisture.

Virgin coconut oil contains traces of vitamins, minerals, and plant sterols (a chemical structure that mimics blood cholesterol and can help reduce the absorption of cholesterol in the body). It is nearly 100 percent fat, 80-90 percent of which is saturated fat.

How is Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) Different from Regular (Copra) Coconut Oil?

Regular coconut oil is made from dried coconut kernels called 'copra'. The copra is pressed using an expeller. The extracted oil is then refined, decolourized and bleached. Since it is hydrogenated, normal coconut oil contains trans-fat. Since copra coconut oil is Refined and bleached, it does not contain any aroma or flavour. Artificial scent and flavour are added to it to make it taste the way it does.

On the other hand, virgin coconut oil is extracted from the fresh milk/meat of coconut using a cold-press process, which maintains all the natural nutrients and antioxidants of the oil. Virgin coconut oil is rich in medium-chain fatty acids and doesn’t contain any trans fat. It is non-greasy and is lighter in viscosity and has a tropical coconut flavour and aroma.

Benefits of Virgin Coconut Oil

Virgin Coconut Oil Supports Weight Loss

The lauric acid present in virgin coconut oil converts into energy instead of being stored in your body as fat and could potentially help in weight loss. The MCTs present in VCO can help increase the number of calories your body burns when compared with longer-chain fatty acids.

VCO is packed with Vitamin E, antioxidants, and polyphenols. These help in maintaining the body’s hormone levels, which in turn helps keep weight in check.

Since virgin coconut oil is high in calories, it should be combined with a healthy diet and exercise for maximum benefits.

Note that coconut oil is very high in calories and can easily lead to weight gain if consumed in large amounts.

Virgin Coconut Oil Helps Keep Cholesterol in Check

VCO contains all the right kinds of fatty acids and is an excellent source of energy that helps the body burn fat. The lauric acids in virgin coconut oil help raise HDL (good cholesterol levels) in your blood, which can, in turn, reduce the risk of heart diseases.

Virgin Coconut Oil Boosts Immunity

VCO works as a natural antibiotic by disrupting the cell walls of bacteria. The antioxidants present in virgin coconut oil reduces inflammation. It contains antibacterial and antiviral properties which help cure diseases herpes, measles and influenza virus. VCO helps lower Candida and reduces bacterial infections.

Virgin Coconut Oil Prevents Hair Breakage and Split Ends

Virgin coconut oil helps protect hair against damage that occurs due to the many products that are used on a daily basis. The heat of the styling products such as straightening irons or curling irons, as well as the sun, damages our hair significantly. VCO protects the hair against damage by forming a layer of protection when it is applied to the hair.

Virgin Coconut Oil Moisturizes Hair and Scalp

VCO helps your hair and your scalp regain moisture that is lost during the dry and cold seasons. Applying some of the virgin coconut oil (slightly warmed up) to your hair and scalp right after showering will help and condition your hair and moisturise the scalp.

Virgin Coconut Oil Moisturizes the Skin

Cold-pressed VCO is an extremely nourishing oil as it is rich in nutrients and helps moisturize the skin. Applying it on your skin after a bath creates a thin barrier over your skin and does not let water escape, and therefore hydrates and moisturizes the skin.

Virgin Coconut Oil Acts as an Alternative to Shaving Cream

Cold-pressed VCO protects your skin from razor burns and dryness while shaving by keeping the skin lubricated and moisturized at the same time. It also prevents the formation of bumps on the skin due to irritation after shaving.

Virgin Coconut Oil Soothes Skin Conditions

The soothing, anti-bacterial properties in VCO helps reduce redness, scales, thickness and flakiness caused by skin conditions such as Eczema, Psoriasis etc. Applying it to the affected area 2-3 times a day will show significant results after consistent usage.

Is Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) Safe for Babies?

Virgin coconut oil ( VCO) is safe to use on the paper-thin skin of babies. Medical research has discovered that using virgin coconut oil on premature or low weight babies can help protect and thicken their thin, delicate skin.

Give your baby a bath using warm water and gentle baby shampoo. Pat your baby dry and wrap them in a soft towel. Take some coconut oil and rub it between your palms to warm it. Gently massage the coconut oil into your baby’s skin.

Can Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) be Used for Dogs?

Virgin coconut oil is generally considered safe for dogs to eat in small amounts or have applied to their skin or fur for shine.

The amount of VCO you give your dog depends on its size. If your dog is overweight or is obese, make sure you don’t give it coconut oil more than once a day. Do not serve coconut oil directly to your dogs, mix it well with your dog’s regular food to keep its diet filled with nutrients.

For a shiny coat, simply rub a small amount of VCO into your hands and massage it onto the skin and fur. The coconut oil helps your dog's coat appear more healthy and glossy.

How to Check if your Virgin Coconut Oil is Pure?

Genuine virgin coconut oil has a fresh, distinct coconut aroma, and a mild tropical coconut flavour. Virgin coconut oil appears to be ivory-white or sometimes slightly pale yellowish in colour.

Here is a simple test you can do at home to check the purity of virgin coconut oil

Take some virgin coconut oil in a glass bowl and place it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. If the oil is pure, the entire sample will solidify into a white-ish colour.

If there is a different outcome, for example, if the oil separates in layers, then you know it is adulterated. After freezing the oil, if it turns grey in colour or hardens too much then it’s not pure.
